Sonic the Comic designs- commission by BenBates Sonic the Comic designs- commission by BenBates
:iconthekkm: asked for these fun, super sketchy commissions of 'Sonic the Comic' characters.

Turns out the Brits also did a comic based on the Sonic games in the early 90's. Its packed with just as many goofy characters and is as off course as all the American attempts to adapt the property.

I've never read any European comics until a few years ago when my good pal Dustin Weaver introduced me to them. It was around that same time when I started working on Archie's Sonic comics and I stumbled across 'Sonic the Comic'  while doing research. The wonderful thing I discovered about many European comics, and it holds true with Sonic the Comic, is the attention and dedication to crafting environments. The first few pages I saw were a battle between Sonic and Metal Sonic, really killer looking stuff! This blog has those pages and more- nemo-incognito.livejournal.com…
That Knuckles and Sonic battle is great too!

Anyway, they needed to craft their own characters and this is some of them-

Tekno the canary- I really liked the way Carl Flint drew her (shapes, its all about shapes!), but it seems like an important part of her design is to cover one eye. Her earrings are great because they don't adhere to reality, which cartoons like these never should. They appear to simply float on the side of her head. Imaginative and fun.
It reminds me of the intro to Sonic Unleashed, and possibly the first time we've ever been shown how Sonic "carries" the Chaos Emeralds. Man, I loved it!!!
Way to go European designers, you're ahead of the curve with Tekno. (Also, they've refrained from giving her "hair"!)

Shortfuse- I don't like the way anyone drew this character. I also don't like the concept, here or in the american interpretations. Changing characters into badass robot versions of themselves is too generic of a concept to me. Its trying too hard to be "cool". I'm partial to how Eggman's robots work and look in the games, especially the games when this character would presumably have been created.

Amy Rose- From what I gather she changed outfits regularly in the series and was a sharpshooter. :iconthekkm: has some drawings he's done himself where I lifted the gun concept from.

Grimer- What a weirdo! He's an assistant to Dr. Eggman. I do like his color scheme and Tezuka style hair, but I think its a huge downer how he's so generically 'evil scientist' with the white lab coat and all. I'm super glad Eggman didn't fall into that design trap.

Archie's are NOT based off of the games. They are an entirely different story.

They are based off the games. Of course they are, they didn't make Sonic out of nowhere.

They are based off the games but don't follow the story or characterization.

I really like Amy's design. I wish Sega would have made this her design and also give her this type of personality, instead of the "sonic fan girl" personality. I like her classic design better.

I was a follower of the Fleetway comics and remember all of these characters well, though I don't remember Amy ever wearing that particular getup. Often she'd wear something reminiscent of a kilt (or at least something in plaid) - honestly I don't think that was a good choice for her.

The observation regarding Tekno's earrings is interesting - I don't think I consciously picked up on that irregularity when I was following the comics back in the day. Shortfuse was an interesting character too (up to a point).

I love these designs! Shortfuse especially looks cool, he seems a lot more expressive the way you've drawn him, and the colors really make his design interesting... the hazard lines are really clever, too! He looks like he's been roboticized, rather than the animal core style of his becoming-a-robot backstory. Tekno and Amy are both adorable, too! I love the little slit in Amy's skirt for her tail and her boots (not to mention her hair- I've always loved how it looks it StC) and I like that Tekno's earrings are Power Rings! (Gosh, it's no wonder you work for Archie, your art and designs are amazing..! I can't wait to see more of your work~)

Haha, fantastic effort with Grimer there! Grimer has to be one of the most unSega-style characters ever to appear in any officially licensed material and, you know, I think this may be the only attempt I've seen to Sega-fy him at all. He'll never look like a Sonic character, but this is still a really cool rendition and I like how changing his proportions has really emphasised the black in his colour scheme, and how his red eyes stand out.

I'm surprised you think Grimer looks like a generic evil scientist, though. I mean, he's very obviously an Igor-style design (he is a Mad Doctor's Assistant, after all), but I think his hyper-expressive, angular, pop-eyed face and the weird details of his design (spidery hair, vaguely camp bowtie and frilly shirt, completely unexplained metal backpack/breathing apparatus thing) make him really unique. There were a few other characters like him (all designed by Richard Elson) and as a kid I really thought they contributed a lot to StC's weird aesthetic.

Anyway, it's so cool to see the very 90s StC characters in a modern Sega/Archie style! Great work!

Firstly, YAY TEKNO! Absolutely adorable presentation of her here. And I really like your take on Shorty, the blockier approach to the armour is really nice. Makes him feel more like a badnik.

Man...I'm really happy to see this, and looking through that live-journal link has filled me with warm nostalgia. This comic made up a huge part of my child-hood, and you've done a wonderful job with these guys. Great work.

As a devoted reader of Sonic the Comic back in the day, I love your take on these characters, Ben. Though that said, that design of Shortfuse would be rather impractical. Look at those limbs! Shorty couldn't put his real limbs inside those things! His tail does look badass, mind.

Also, did you know that Grimer was actually a replacement for Snively? Snivs was originally planned to be included as Robotnik's lackey in StC but got dropped when Grimer was introduced, further setting apart StC's and Archie's continuities.

Does Shortfuse wear armor? I assumed he was a robot. Or was turned into a robot.

I did read Grimer was a quick replacement for Snively while I was looking up visual reference. But that sounds as if the StC staff had access to, and to some degree believed they were to include, the Satam material. Were any other Satam aspects originally used? Is it the same story/universe setting?
If not, why was Snively the only thing getting brought over?

Shortfuse was one of a few "Cybernik's" that Robotnik created. Rather than stuffing animals in robots as power supplies he took a few individuals and forced them into cybernetic suits (like Iron Man) in which the suit basically took over all control of the host creating a whole new personality. They were built to be better, stronger, and faster than regular Badniks, and being run by an organic host meant they could adapt to situations as they changed and make judgement calls.
However, Shorty was a bit of a failure as he rejected the suit, keeping true to himself, and escaped, later freeing Tekno who was one of Robonik's collaborators turned prisoner. While Shorty was one o the good guy's he was unfortunately trapped within his suit. It was only years later while staying with an alien race that they discovered a way to open the suit, allowing him to leave it and still use it when he wanted.

Oh and yeah, Shortfuse wears armor. Think of shoving a Sonic-size squirrel into a badnik instead of just a small squirrel; and think the badnik is Iron Man's armour.

they had access to very very early SatAM elements (and by they, probably only the editors- the writers and artists were freelancers), unless you mean access as in permission to use; in which case no, the writer just thought they'd have to include Snively as he was in the cartoon that started airing around that time. SEGA did suggest the inclusion of a Freedom Fighter team though, IIRC, and although the writer has denied a connection, Johnny Lightfoot and Porker Lewis are just too visually similar to the planned Johnny and Porker on the early SatAM concepts. Maybe only Elson, the artist, saw those?

A bit more detail (I'm actually not sure I didn't already tell him this when I commissioned, but whatever :P)-

Snively was planned to be Robotnik's lackey as the writer thought he'd be forced to include Snively due to SatAM. He was then told it was the exact opposite, they COULDN'T use Snively, so Grimer was made as a replacement.

Odd how things go.

It's Robotnik, not Eggman.

ANYWAY, is there a chance these characters (minus Amy) might appear in upcoming Archie/Sonic issues?

Oh yeah, we were talking about the name change a long time ago. They still call him Robotnik in Sonic the Comic? They oughta let go of the past.

I was at an after hours party at San Diego a couple of years ago, surrounded by all the other Archie staff, and to my surprise there was a lot of discussion about trying to get Sonic the Comic characters over into the Archie continuity. Now with new 252 reboot I think its pretty much settled that its not going to happen but I from what I recall the idea was to do a miniseries kind of crossover event. The British Sonic and pals would meet the American Sonic and his pals and get into a big fight. I always wondered who would win in that fight. Sonic or Sonic?

sONIC THE cOMIC ENDED oops caps

Sonic the Comic ended in 2003, Sonic the Comic-Online! is a fanzine continuation. The use of game elements has been much looser as the focus has been more on continuing the comic, so it's been Robotnik all the way through so far.
