asked for these fun, super sketchy commissions of 'Sonic the Comic' characters.
Turns out the Brits also did a comic based on the Sonic games in the early 90's. Its packed with just as many goofy characters and is as off course as all the American attempts to adapt the property.
I've never read any European comics until a few years ago when my good pal Dustin Weaver introduced me to them. It was around that same time when I started working on Archie's Sonic comics and I stumbled across 'Sonic the Comic' while doing research. The wonderful thing I discovered about many European comics, and it holds true with Sonic the Comic, is the attention and dedication to crafting environments. The first few pages I saw were a battle between Sonic and Metal Sonic, really killer looking stuff! This blog has those pages and more- nemo-incognito.livejournal.com…
That Knuckles and Sonic battle is great too!
Anyway, they needed to craft their own characters and this is some of them-
Tekno the canary- I really liked the way Carl Flint drew her (shapes, its all about shapes!), but it seems like an important part of her design is to cover one eye. Her earrings are great because they don't adhere to reality, which cartoons like these never should. They appear to simply float on the side of her head. Imaginative and fun.
It reminds me of the intro to Sonic Unleashed, and possibly the first time we've ever been shown how Sonic "carries" the Chaos Emeralds. Man, I loved it!!!
Way to go European designers, you're ahead of the curve with Tekno. (Also, they've refrained from giving her "hair"!)
Shortfuse- I don't like the way anyone drew this character. I also don't like the concept, here or in the american interpretations. Changing characters into badass robot versions of themselves is too generic of a concept to me. Its trying too hard to be "cool". I'm partial to how Eggman's robots work and look in the games, especially the games when this character would presumably have been created.
Amy Rose- From what I gather she changed outfits regularly in the series and was a sharpshooter.
has some drawings he's done himself where I lifted the gun concept from.
Grimer- What a weirdo! He's an assistant to Dr. Eggman. I do like his color scheme and Tezuka style hair, but I think its a huge downer how he's so generically 'evil scientist' with the white lab coat and all. I'm super glad Eggman didn't fall into that design trap.
