Sonic Legacy Vol 2 cover by BenBates Sonic Legacy Vol 2 cover by BenBates
This was a blast! This one started to set the tone for how I would like to approach all the Legacy series covers (if I continue to create them). In my mind this would be a poster for a 90's american animated movie, all the credits going down there at the bottom.

This was a ton of fun to look through the old comics to find fun stuff to draw. I started reading Sonic comics starting with issue 25 (my favorite issue probably) so it was incredible to be drawing something professional for the comics I enjoyed so many years ago. My favorite Robotnik inventions to draw were the sled and weather station from issue 26.

If you have your own copy or search for the cover online you'll find some differences between this original file I turned in and the final printed product. Changes I like!

I was busy looking at the old comics for reference so I got hung up on the old details. In mine you'll see all the Archie characters have blue eyes, or because I was referencing issue 25 I decided to draw Mecha(Metal) Sonic with the head shape from the comic (which was stupid of me. Of course I should have drawn his real head.)

You'll also notice Sonic has a hint of color at the bottom of his eye. In my mind, this was a reflection of light from his muzzle, but in the final its turned green to reference his modern eye color. Which I like a lot more! Just a hint of green.

Haha, I just noticed I also gave you the full image with bleed art included. So you can see the sled to the left and the Swat Bots to the right just turn into undefined blobs.

I typically try to load images up near the publication dates. Looking it up just now, it appears to be one volume a year so far. And Vol 2 just came out last month?! Wow, I had no clue.
Well, I don't know if I want to wait a whole year to show off that cover...

Given I already have the issues in this book, I'll probably get this just for the cover. I love your style of coloring on this so much. Everything's just...perfect. I actually prefer Sonic's eyes in this version, because he did have brown eyes back then, but I know SEGA wants that omitted from the flashbacks.

Contrary to some opinions, I think this is a perfect composition to represent classic Archie Sonic.

Each character is bold and animated, much like the styles of Scott Shaw! and other early artists. The Freedom Fighters exhibit their former, more interesting, personalities and ol' Dr. Robotnik looking like his former, formidable self.

The whole thing does have a classic movie poster style to it. While Spaz' Sonic Archives covers are good and representative of 90's Japanese Sega Sonic art, I think this style better suits the Archie comics plus the poster-style layout makes it more eye-catching which is an essential factor when designing the cover of a comic or any other retail product. Basically, if I were a kid, this would appeal to me more.

So, in that regard, I think you succeeded splendidly.

It's an interesting composition, but the execution feels pretty sub-par. The drawings, inking and shading are all so incredibly basic that it hardly taxes your artistic creativity. I've seen more dynamic and detailed covers from Yardley in recent years, so this feels like a disappointing step back. If you're going for retro, I would much rather have seen something reminiscent of Spaz's covers from the pre-100 issues. *sigh*

How do you get the lines so smooth after using Threshold in Photoshop? Do you scan in the drawing at a reeeeally high resolution? Whenever I use Threshold my lineart looks very stair-steppy.

All the character art in this is inked digitally with the pen tool to get all those perfect smooth inks. I pretty sure I used threshold on them afterwards, but for sure I inked the Robotnik vehicles and stuff by hand and thresheld them.

The pen tool takes practice but you'll quickly get the hang of it. You could probably look up a ton of tutorials on it.

The most recent thing I saw (and this was a couple months, maybe even a year ago) was a livestream by :iconladygt: where she uses the pen tool quickly and efficiently. She wasn't doing a tutorial but just watching her do stuff will teach you what you need to know. Find her livestream watch what you can and see what she does. She's good. Too good.

Combine that with some tutorials if need be. Soon you'll be a master.
