IDW TMNT animated issue 2 variant by BenBates IDW TMNT animated issue 2 variant by BenBates
Oh yeah, I drew this a while ago. Lot of fun to draw these new designs.

I think the new show, its a good thing. A really good thing to exist for the Turtles. It's like 80% good, which is pretty high for this sort of property.
I love the shows creative freedom in letting tons of mutants, aliens, and crazy stuff run around. It utilizes cool elements from the past that I want to see (like Mutagen Man! Dustin Weaver and I wanted to have a Mutagen Man reference in the Rocksteady and Bebop micro, but then the show used him so we figured we should back off) and brings in exciting new stuff like the sea monster and cool Turtles sub.
They aren't afraid of having fun with the property and seem to be moving right along with the story.

And yet another sonic/tmnt. You know sometimes I wonder if its a sign for a future crossover comic.

Hey thanks! Trying to capture the look of the 3D models was a great challenge, and for how fast I drew it and not practicing ahead of time I was fairly pleased with the results. Would love to get try again some time and get it "just right".

Great drawing :D
Someone mentioned they are more ninja-like in this show and I can agree. In 2k3 they were all about honor :XD: like samurai-ninjas.. Didn't make sense for me at least :P

Ooh, really like this. More suited to the style I'm used to seeing you use in the Archie comics. So, yeah, I like this a lot.

Again, great work man!

(Love the creative direction for this show, I still thought it was freaking genius they have hidden blades inside Mikey's nunChuks, and Donnie's bo staff.)
I also love how, for probably the first time (as a TV show), they are more their own character, not slightly different knock-offs of each other with slightly different personalities and slightly different voices
and on top of that, this is probably one of the few times they are actually portrayed as ninjas! and not just action heroes with martial arts weapons and a dictionary of puns and one liners.
Or at least on tv, I've seen the cartoon at a really young age, but I've recapped not to long ago. then I remember seeing the live action series as a kid, and also recapped on that just Netflix browsing and looking for something to share with my little bro. I've never gotten to read a single comic though =\

"hidden blades inside Mikey's nunChuks" They are called a Kusarigama or "chain sickles"

Also, have you forgotten about the 4Kids Ninja Turtles!?  Wait, what!?

I remember that show too (I don't remember much of it though) but that goes with my description of them being portrayed more like action heroes then ninja's.

Sorry if I come off as rude now (or before) but the 4Kids ninja turtles were more like ninjas, even though they didn't seem very teenage, well by the look of them at least.... they were definitely ninja's + the voice acting just doesn't seem to fit the characters, I mean in the new TMNT Raphael sounds great! That just how I would expect him to sound, and Leonardo is ok.... but Donatello and Michelangelo's voice were so much more in depth in the older TMNT's because they don't seem all that cool, honestly, +they turned a lot of the Turtles' enemies into friends like, that turtle robot and Leatherhead...

How do they seem more like ninjas in the newer one to you? (I am trying my best not to come off as rude!) (and this is an actual question that I would like for you to answer for me) How much exactly did you watch of the older TMNT's?

The live action movies weren't bad either, do you just have a certain bias against them?

I'M AM SO SORRY IF YOU THOUGHT ANY OF THIS WAS RUDE!

You didn't come off as rude at all man, no worries!
Tell you the truth, I remember next to nothing of that 4Kids TNMT cartoon, so I'll take your word for it.
the live action movies were nice and all, but they were in one way or the other, silly-fied versions of action movies at the time (with a darkish/"child friendly enough" tone)

Also, I had forgotten to mention the CG animated movie, which I've only seen snippets of... it looked way cool, without a doubt, but seemed forgettable for the most part.

And lastly, I feel this generation of TNMT has a more "ninja" feel to it because the japanese philosophy/tone, or how they are usually looking for the sneaky way into things instead of always crashing through a window (and related/unstealthy entries) and the fight scenes aren't full of silly and unneeded playing around, instead more focused on getting the job done (which they might've been in the 4Kids cartoon, I can't remember)
oh, and don't get me started on the classic games... not ninja the slightest i'd say. lol (not bad games, just they are not being assassins the slightest)

All these are strictly opinions anywho, so yeah, there are biases based on my collective idea that the "Ninja" is a title for someone taught (self taught or otherwise) in the martial arts and other skill sets required by the feudal japanese era assassins (when most likely, either now or at the time, ninja was probably a term used basically on any feudal japanese era assassin, trained or not) so yeah, just biases based on the TMNT feeling more akin to "assassins" in this new series. =P

Also, I apologize if I come off as rude. there not being a proficient way of typing your "tone" on DA (Italics, bold, etc. and if there is a way, I don't know it), I understand not wanting to sound impolite.
So yeah, no worries XD

What character would you want?

Alopex would be an interesting choice. I wonder how much she would change and whether something from new TMNT material would ever make the jump.

They've already done so much cool stuff, in season 1 or shown in the concept art for season 2, that I don't think there's much else I as a veiwer could ask them to pull from the previous incarnations of the property. I'd really like to see some more new ideas, solid mutants/characters that can rival the ideas they're pulling out of the past.

IDW is going to make a comic of the Nick TMNT canon actually, sense they make most of the TMNT comics now.

Archie I think lost the rights to do more reprints of the Archie "TMNT Adventures" series from the '90s, (like that book they released of the original mini-series as part of the "TMNT 25th anniversary") but I hear another company is going to make reprints of the old Archie TMNTA comics. (Unfortunately, they'll likely be more expensive then Archie's book reprints.)

Several, actually. There's this one, there's a separate series of IDW comics, there's the Archie comics (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures), and there are the original Mirage Studios comics (currently being reprinted by IDW, by the way). I think I might even be missing a few. Many, if not most of the older ones (like the Mirage and Archie comics) are being reprinted by IDW, I believe.

Actually, I'm not sure if they're reprinting the comics other than the stuff from Mirage and Archie. I know at the very least, those two are being reprinted though.

Great variant, didn't know there was an Animated comic as well.

I tried getting into the show with me being a long-time turtles fan I really did but I just can't get comfortable with it for some reason.

Eh, its just not my cup of tea.

Hmm...I can take a stab at why.

I think 1 thing is the humor. Yeah its a kids show, but its predecessor was a kids show and had humor but never felt like it was trying to pander to its younger audience, which is what I get from this show. The humor just feels forced at times, like they are trying to recapture that long burned out 1987 flair but not really doing a good job at it, hell "Turtles Forever" did a better job and that was parodying the 1987 series. And it bugs me that they have to use Anime Emotional Expressions in a series where it was never needed to be funny, like somehow your going to get a jolly if you saw Michelangelo using a shocked anime expression. I would be okay with it if this show was trying to mimic an eastern art style like Teen Titans, but its not and I feel that those kind of tropes should stay within their genres of animation, this is coming from a person who enjoys western and eastern animations.

Another is plot. its like a mesh of the 2003 and 1987 plots and I was hoping that with this new series would come new ideas, new rehashed ones. in the 10 episodes I watched I kept saying to myself "thats from TMNT 2003" or "thats from the classic series" but I guess when you try new you end up with...The Next Mutation. and I'm still downing brain bleach daily to forget about that mess...

The rest is small nitpicks. character designs for some characters, retcons, the weird Donatello X April crush, Mikey's new catchphrase, the voices.

Couple things this show got right though, they FINALLY made master splinter not a weak and feeble character, I always hated that trait that their master was weaker then the rest of them. like the fact that some characters from the comics and the old '87 series are making animated appearances, something I was hoping the '03 series would do but never did. theres more but I'm tired atm.

So yeah I think its just every aspect of this show that just doesn't sit well with me. but I fee like I'm in bizarro world because just about everyone likes this show except me and usually I'm the guy that likes everything everybody doesn't like.
